Looming recession shows need for Economic Charter
The weather is now warm, summer is upon us and our efforts to strengthen the economy are only ramping up.
Did you see the worrisome news that Canada is now heading into a recession? After two consecutive quarters of negative growth, it’s clear that more needs to be done to support the economy. Workers and job creators need a boost.
Here are some interesting remarks from Philip Cross, former chief economic analyst at Statistics Canada, in the Financial Post: “Whether or not Canada’s quarterly GDP grew or shrank fractionally over the past six months is of trivial importance compared with the inarguable fact that per capita growth has stalled since 2015. Our economy has not just had a bad couple of quarters, it has faltered for a decade, mostly because of persistently weak business investment. This is the major economic problem facing the country.”
If Canada had spent a decade embracing pro-growth policies instead of ones that tie the hands of our entrepreneurs, things would look much different today. Policy matters. Policy has consequences.
This is precisely why we advocate for the principles of the Canadian Economic Charter, to increase prosperity for all. Something has to change in terms of meaningful tax reform, red tape reduction and more. The path we are on is not working.
The New Wave Common Sense Business Association, which is bringing together small businesses across the country, is one of the primary ways we are promoting the Charter.
FRIDAY HARBOUR WITH FRANK
Last month, supporters of the Canadian Economic Charter gathered for an intimate dining experience at Friday Harbour Resort. Entrepreneurs from across Ontario – and even a couple visitors from Austria! – gathered to discuss the economy, hear from Frank Stronach and enjoy dinner together.
We are proud of our advocacy and also proud to bring like-minded people together for engaging and inspiring networking. It would be great to see you at our next gathering!
TELL US YOUR STORY
We love hearing directly from entrepreneurs and business owners. Richard Bergman, who runs a manufacturing facility in Ottawa, sent us a great video on his concerns with the tax system.

Please send us your short video or written testimonial on what needs to be done to fix the Canadian economy and we will share it far and wide.
